Eyenova Outreach Program at Roman Catholic – Mama Maria Mwokozi, Sinza Dsm

Eyenova Specialized Clinic is a notable specialized hi-tech private center in Tanzania dedicated to providing comprehensive services and innovative treatments for various eye conditions. The facility was established with a mission to provide quality eye care in Tanzania and help improve and preserve sight. In order to fulfil this dream, the facility on 23rd June, 2024 conducted a comprehensive outreach eye camps that designed to screen for all kinds of common eye problems, with focusing exclusively on cataracts. The eye camp was conducted in Dar es Salaam at Roman Catholic Church, Mama Maria Mwokozi Parish, Sinza whereby more than 100 clients were attended. Common eye disease identified were refractive eye, allergic conjunctivitis, glaucoma, conjunctival mass, dry eyes and cataract. Minor eye ailments and refractive errors were treated at the camp site with medication or eyeglasses.  Patients identified with cataract were brought to the facility for free surgery while those identified with specialty conditions are referred to tertiary hospital. Advantages from the exercise is that Patients benefit from improved access, early detection, and treatment, leading to enhanced vision and increased awareness. Eye camps also positively impact patients’ emotional well-being, foster community support, and alleviate financial burdens.

NUMBER OF PATIENTS ATTENDED

Total number of patients screened were 105, below 15 years old were 21clients.

EYE PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED

The common diagnosis identified were:

  1. Refractive error      34
  2. Normal eyes            14
  3. Allergic conjunctivitis 13
  4. Glaucoma suspect         10
  5. Conjunctival mass        5
  6. Dry eyes                       5
  7. Cataract                         2

REFERRAL

Total number of referral to our clinic were 10 glaucoma suspect clients.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Delivered high quality eye treatment to the community
  • Enhanced the branding and reputation of our clinic
  • Increased eye disease awareness from the community
  • Reduced financial burden from clients

OBSERVED CHALLENGES

  • Limited number of staffs to provide service especially optometrist and dispensing nurse., in large volume of clients.
  • Some of medications were not available

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • To increase the number of staffs to meet the demand of clients
  • More advertisement in order to reach large number of people
